How do they celebrate in Germany ?First Day of School "School Cones“ / "Sugar Cones“ A German Tradition since 1781. On their very first day of elementary school/primary school little children in Germany traditionally get a big crafted and colored cardboard cone filled with sweets and little gifts such as crayons, little books, drinking bottles, lunchboxes… It is obligatory and very popular and especially mom‘s put a lot of effort into designing those school cones or sugar cones. Parents want to keep them as a memory of this first great day for their little ones - unfortunately many of these Cones suffer a sad and lonely existence in the attic until their dusty and filthy and finally are getting dumped. Help was handed in shape of us sewers - the idea was born to sewing covers for the cones and after the great day removing the cardboard blank and inserting inlets to give them a long lasting life as a cushion. They still come in different shapes, sizes and materials though not only fabric. Very popular ist also to match them with the school bags. Greetings from Bavaria, Germany First day of school was 09/14, 2021. ![]() This lovely creation is a Sugar Cone Cake, created by a loving Grandmother that wished to remain anonymous. Even with most families in the US sitting around doing nothing for the last year and a half we still didn't create anything this amazing. This story was shared with me through a connection from a sewing group. If you would like to know a little more about this little town in Germany check back later this week for the follow up story.
